I got a Black & Decker Corded Power Drill but something inside the drill like a “dark coal bar” worn out after long time use.
Does anyone know what is the “dark coal bar” called.
And where can I buy it for replacement.
“the dark coal bar is like a brush for the generator, when the machine turns it makes little bit of fire light”.

  1. just wonderin says:

that bar is an electric brush, just go to an electric supply house and they should either have one or be able to get you one….a black and decker dealer should have them as well, as well as the black and decker company HQ

  2. I forgot what they are called, but they are the most common replaced part on a drill. I would google Black and Decker replacement parts and you will find them.

  3. The “dark coal bar” is an electical contact called a “brush” to the armature of the motor of the drill. There are two of them — one on each side of the arnature — feed “wheel” to supply the electrical current for the motor to operate. If the brushes are sparking badly, it means that they have worn down to the point that the metal holders for the brushes are beginning to touch the armature feed “wheel”, which will be totally ruined if the power tool is continued to be operated. The brushes need to be replaced NOW by a person who is knowledgeable about such things. The armature feed “wheel” should be examined carefully to see how badly it might have been damaged or it might just chew up the new brushes in no time. Replacing that probably would mean a new power tool, if your repair person didn’t just happen to have a good-as-new, spare armature that would fit the old tool.

  4. The entire drill is probably ruined.
A worn out carbon brush on a drill is a sign that the drill has seen its lifetime cycle. What happens along with that carbon brush goes wear on the armature (round steel rotating part) on both the copper and the insulation.
Drills are not worth fixing. I see them around on sale here in Chicago at Menards for $10 quite often and regular price is $15.
That Black and Decker brand is a low line brand, a KMart drill so its not worth much to start with.
    Get a new one.

  6. yeah the brushes are gone for sure pearsonally i would throw the thing away you can get a new drill just as cheap as new brushes theese days black and decker are more or less disposable tools anyway you dont expect them to last forever besides which its probably knackered anyway the brushes will have worn out the comutator on the motor aswell and it will spark like hell when u put new brushes in it

  7. The “dark coal bars” (there should be two) are called “brushes”. They do wear out after a great deal of use.
Find your nearest B&D service center at http://www.blackanddecker.com/CustomerCe… Call them and they should be able to get you replacements.
You will need the model number and serial number.
