Actually, pliers do grip it. Get yourself two pair of slip-joint pliers, commonly called channel-locks. One is the hold-back pair, the other will turn the chuck loose. If used correctly, they will be employed opposite to each other. You can also insert a slot screwdriver into the gear edges used by the tightening key, and strike with a hammer.
put the drill in reverse, hang on TIGHT to the chuck & GENTLY squeeze the trigger. it should loosen fairly easily
Unplug the drill, wrap it in a small towel to avoid smashing the body, put the drill in a vise, I hope it does not need a key. Take a 14″ pipe wrench and aply a counter-clcokwise motion to the spinny part between the body and the chuck. The chuck got jammed because there was an uneven pressure on it from the bit. Try to use at least a 2″ magnetic tip holder.
hold it by the handle in one hand and give it a few well placed hits with a hammer letting yore arm absorb the blow
